| Exhibit | Freedom of Assembly |
One of the fundamental rights enjoyed by the people of the United States, enshrined in the First Amendment to the Constitution, is that of Freedom of Assembly. Ann Arborites have never shied from exercising this right to its fullest extent. Strikes to address labor issues, protests directed at social injustices, and mass actions to argue both for and against laws have long been part of Ann Arbor's culture and identity. Even in the 1960s and 1970s, at the peak of protests nationwide, this city was recognized as a hub of such actions on a par with Berkeley, California and Madison, Wisconsin.
Using hundreds of photographs from Andy Sacks, Wystan Stevens, and the photographers at the Ann Arbor News, this exhibit means to show the many ways Ann Arbor stood up for what it believed in over the course of the twentieth century and the many topics it sought to redress. While these demonstrations run the gamut from large to small, from peaceful to violent, and from enraged to joyful, they all illustrate the passions of the people involved and the willingness of Ann Arbor to stand up for what it believed.

| Exhibit | Laomagination: Refugee Re/creation |
Michigan's Southeast Asian community recently marked the 50th anniversary of the end of the Vietnam War and the Laotian Civil War. As the United States approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding, this exhibition invites an open conversation among refugees, immigrants, and neighbors about what it means to rebuild across generations.
Reflecting on journeys shaped by political transformation, the exhibit considers how young peopleâs voices belong in these ongoing conversations about identity, memory, and belonging. Through the themes of windows, mirrors, and sliding doors, it explores representation in childrenâs literature, games, and toys: the objects that helped shape how Lao communities saw themselves, who they believed they could become, and what is now being passed to the next generation after their first fifty years in America.
Featuring approximately 100 prints, artifacts, photographs, rare books, and magazines spanning more than a century of Lao history, and highlighting modern artworks, the pieces examine how Lao refugees recreated homes, traditions, and institutions lost in diaspora while imagining futures in which they could see themselves.

| Fore-Site (Phase 2): The Stamps Gallery Pillar Project |
From September 2025 through November 2026, Stamps Gallery is partnering in a curatorial collaboration with two Ypsilanti-based, artist-run project spaces led by Stamps alumni: C.Y.N.K. Studios, directed by Sally Clegg (Lecturer III and Student Exhibition Coordinator, MFA â20) and Abhishek Narula (MFA â20); and Sometimes Space, directed by Nathan Byrne (Lecturer I, MFA â21). Each space hosts dozens of artists annually for exhibitions, performances, and events, fostering experimental work and building community. For this project, Byrne, Clegg, and Narula have been commissioned to reimagine the pillars on Division Street that flank the gallery. In response, theyâve curated six artists to create new work for the pillars over three cycles:
Phase 1 (September 12 - December 12) artists: Amelia Burns (Cranbrook MFA â23) and Erin McKenna (MFA â20)
Phase 2 (January 12 - August 12) artists: Sally Clegg (MFA â20) and Kim Karlsrud (MFA â20)
Phase 3 (September 12 - November 12) artists: Abhishek Narula (MFA â20) and Nathan Byrne (MFA â21)
Phase 2 Curatorial Statement
Curated by Sometimes Space: Sally Clegg (entry pillar)
Curated by CYNK Studios: Kim Karlsrud (courtyard pillar)
Artists Sally Clegg and Kim Karlsrud wrap the Division Street pillars in highly site-specific ornament unearthed from the overlooked margins of Ann Arbor. On the Courtyard pillar, Karlsrud scales up photographs of objects found in liminal spaces surrounding campus buildings on Green Road, which the artist has encrusted in road salt. On the entryway pillar, Clegg zooms in on tiny fragments of found material from UMichâs famous ârockâ to celebrate nearly seven decades of student art and activism. Both artists uplift aggregate of local human activity to reveal tiny worlds of found form.
Sally Clegg: Sentimentary Rock
Sentimentary Rock is a composition of paint slag collected from the UMich rock monument at the corner of Washtenaw Avenue and Hill Street. This colorful composite material has been accumulating at the base of the iconic limestone boulder since the mid 1950âs, when students began a tradition of painting it in acts of protest, creativity, and ritual, sometimes multiple times per week. Akin to byproducts of industry such as âForditeâ (collectable chunks of automotive overspray sometimes called âDetroit agateâ), Sentimentary Rock includes thousands of layers, each dripped from a palimpsestic public proclamation. When processed, sculpted, sealed, assembled, and macro-photographed, the result is this enlarged array of tiny gems, intended to celebrate the indissoluble student voice.
Kim Karlsrud: What Amasses
What Amasses is an assemblage of everyday found objects collected within the Miller Creek watershed, an urbanized drainage system that encompasses much of the city of Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan campus. Selected objects were immersed in a road salt solution, allowing delicate crystalline formations to emerge. Road salt is a common material input into these hydrological networks during the winter months and exists in multiple states of refinement, expression, coherence, and fragmentation. Each object was then arranged, photographed, and enlarged to recontextualize these materials in ways that invite deeper reflections on how infrastructure and human agency blur notions of the natural and the artificial.

Sally Clegg
Sally Clegg is an artist and educator from Pelham, Massachusetts. Her studio practice is rooted in sculpture and expanded printmaking, stemming from a fascination with human efforts to make meaning from our relationships to objects. Clegg integrates history, popular culture, literature and philosophy as material for artmaking, leveraging personal anecdote and humor to reveal the complexity, absurdity, and theoretical richness at play in our connections to things and to ourselves.
Clegg holds an MFA in Art from The University of Michigan Stamps School of Art & Design, and a BA in Art & English from Goucher College. She has exhibited nationally and internationally, and her work can be found in permanent collections at Yale University, The New York Public Library, and elsewhere. | Marianetta Porter: Breath, Fragment, Return |
Curated by Juana Williams, this exhibition examines how Marianetta Porter uses everyday objects, fragments, and embodied memory to make absence an active, living presence while challenging linear histories. Rooted in African American experience, her practice treats what is discarded, overlooked, or missing not as loss, but as a source of meaning that continues to act on the present. Through her process and materials, Porter reveals how memory is carried in the body and embedded in ordinary things. Her work also resists forward-moving notions of time, instead presenting a diasporic temporality in which past, present, and lived experience circulate together through repetition, touch, and recall. In doing so, Porter proposes a vision of history as unfinished, memory as active, and absence as a force that sustains connection and shapes the present.
Marianetta Porter is a visual artist and product designer whose research and creative practice are grounded in the study of African American history, culture, and representation. Through the language of visual art, she draws connections between historic memory and contemporary African American life, giving voice to the history of the African diaspora while acknowledging its central influence on the birth and flourishing of American culture.
Her work has been exhibited nationally at institutions such as the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry, the Spoleto Festival, the Harriet Tubman Museum, and the Hampton University Museum of Art.
She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Hampton University and her Master of Fine Arts from the University of Michigan. The recipient of numerous awards, Porter is Professor Emeritus at the University of Michiganâs Stamps School of Art and Design.
Juana Williams is a curator and writer whose work explores the intersections of cross-border intellectual history, cultural memory, and identity formation as expressed through modern and contemporary art from Africa and its diasporas.
Williams has held curatorial and academic appointments at organizations including the Detroit Institute of Arts, Library Street Collective, Wayne State University, and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Art. Her curatorial projects have been presented at institutions across the United States and France, including the Grand Rapids Art Museum, the Muskegon Museum of Art, Palais de Tokyo (Paris), and the Westmoreland Museum of American Art. In addition, she has presented lectures at various museums and universities and contributed to numerous exhibition catalogs. Her work has been written about in publications such as Artsy, Beaux Arts Magazine, CondĂŠ Nast Traveller, Michigan Chronicle, and Observer. Williams holds a BA in Fine Art and an MA in Art History from Wayne State University.

| Zingermans Bakehouse, BAKE!: Detroit Classics |
Experience three classics from Detroit that have been around since the 1920s and 1940s. Together we'll make
Detroit-Style Deep Dish Pizza baked in a traditional blue steel pan;
Spiced Almond Cookies, in the classic windmill shape;
and a Long John Coffee Cake, with a butter, brown sugar, and walnut streusel. Get a little piece of history and a big bite of flavor, along with plenty of hands-on practice and tips for mastering these Detroit favorites.
You'll leave the BAKE! class
with our recipes, the knowledge to recreate them at home,
and the pizza, cookies, and coffee cake you made in class.In-Person: We'll end the in-person class with a tasting of what we made and you'll go home with some great coupons.
Virtual: Please visit our Virtual Class Page for all of the instructions you need to be prepared for class. The most important preparations are measuring all of your ingredients before the class, making sure you have all of the equipment needed, and being ready to use Zoom. What our guests have to say about this class:This class helped me realize that baking isn't as intimidating as I had feared, and can be fun (and not just a chore). âRemy D.These classes make home baking seem much more doable. âMargaret B.I never wanted to make pizza at home but now I definitely will. âArielle J.

| The Ark Presents: Summer Sounds at The Ann Arbor Art Fair |
Summer Sounds at The Ann Arbor Art Fair is hosted by The Ark, Ann Arbor's intimate nonprofit music and performance venue. We are excited to once again partner with the Ann Arbor Summer Art Fair to bring live music each evening of the art fairs to the Stage on Main at the corner of Main and William in the Palio lot. Stop by and join one of our favorite street parties of the year!
THE RUPPLE BROTHERS
6pm
The Rupple Brothers are a psychedelic folk ensemble who combine a love for family, music, life, and improvisation to create a musical space unlike any other. Born unto song, brothers Evan and Cole, and an ever expanding cast of soul brothers, traverse the entire spectrum of sound and space; each being proficient in multiple ways of musical strangeness, while bringing a positive and powerful family message with their brand of wild folk. They have carved themselves out a respected place amongst the Michigan music scene, throwing their own annual grassroots festival Handmade Music Festival in their home of Chesaning, opening for bands like The Way Down Wanderers, Chirp, The Mallett Brothers Band, Tejon Street Corner Thieves, Good Old War, opening up for White Denim at Ann Arborâs Sonic Lunch, winning the Review Award for âBest Duoâ, and playing top tier venues and festivals across the state. They plan to carry their stories of song to the furthest reaches of the universe.
BOBBY ALU
7:30pm
If you ask Byron Bayâs Bobby Alu what his music sounds like, heâll tell you how he hopes it makes you feel: like you have your favorite drink in hand, sipping as the sun sets on a balmy evening thatâs laden with the promise of adventure. In an ideal world, heâd follow summer around the earth, in his endless quest to nail that feeling in his songs.
For Bobby itâs all about letting the music decide where it takes you â creatively and physically â and following the threads of curiosity large, small and often strange. Itâs playing ukulele with old friends at the local market in exchange for a box of vegetables, because how weird is it to improvise along to people buying bananas at 7am on a Tuesday? Itâs going to Ghana with just a hunch and a WhatsApp number to track down the rhythms that lit up his heart. Itâs touring the world for five years as Xavier Ruddâs percussionist, learning how to be in service to the vibe of a room, and how to make the jump to being an international performer in his own right. Itâs honoring his Samoan heritage through sharing the stage and releasing an EP with his mother to connect with the language of her homeland. Always, itâs about being open to discovery: if you choose music, you choose it all.Â

Her artwork and writing has appeared in ASAP/Journal, BOMB Magazine, Sculpture Magazine, and Hyperallergic. She is a lecturer in Art & Design at the University of Michigan. Website / Instagram

| MEETUP: Ypsi Improv: Improv Skills & Games, In Person! + Skills Session |
As we conduct these in person Improv sessions our first priority is keeping everyone safe.
A close second is helping people find plentiful reasons to laugh, learn, and grow in these interesting times.
**Quick safety blurb:**
Covid-19 vaccination is strongly recommended for attendees, but no longer required.
Face masks will be available, to be used at each attendeeâs discretion.
**Improv session details:**
We will meet in person and play improv games in a fun, relaxed, and judgment free setting.
People of all backgrounds and experience levels, especially little/no experience, are welcome!
Ages 16+ are recommended, as our humor can get adult, blue, explicit, etc.
Parents of younger kiddos who want to know more are encouraged to attend for yourselves and then make a decision, as you know your kids best.
We will start with a quick chat about the spirit of improv, an introduction to the fundamentals of improv, and then warm up both body and mind with exercises practicing improv principles.
We will then play games to help learn each otherâs names, games to be intentionally silly, large group games, and explore smaller scale scene work; all while making sure that everyone gets an enjoyable amount of âstageâ time.
We will wind down with a final group game and end with a round table for feedback on the session, announcement of upcoming events, and/or creative projects.
Join us to improve your ability to be in the moment, learn more about improvisation, let your creativity come out to play, and/or just have fun in what some of our attendees like to call your âWeekly weird!â
**3 HOUR SESSION NOTE**
Continuing from a very successful first run in 2025, weâre continuing the Improv Skills Sessions in 2026!
The third and fourth Saturdays of every month will be a 3 HOUR SESSION!
We are continuing to offer the Skills Sessions based on interest and input from the community, to maintain a diverse range of offerings to all interested improvisers.
The plan, which is always open to input and revision, is to hold our usual 2 hour improv session up front, and then have the 3rd hour to focus on a specific improv skill.
Object work, character development, tackling serious improv topics, etc.
We are so excited to continue these Skills Sessions, which the community has found both valuable and fun!
Cost is $8 for 2 hour session, $15 for 3 hour session, and free to watch.
All fees will go towards the rental of the space.
Can be paid in cash at the venue or electronically via:
**PayPal**: [https://www.paypal.me/trentshenanigans](https://www.paypal.me/trentshenanigans)

| MEETUP: 20s & 30s New Friends: Summer Outdoors Hangout 2026 |
**Launching officially for 2026!!!**
Same drill: Setting up a weekly outdoors hangout for those in or near Ann Arbor!
Weâll always start at a **trail or outdoors place** (like the botanical gardens) and then discuss what to do from there: dinner, movie, club, karaoke, etc.
Depending on where people want to go/explore after the walk, our next location will likely vary week to week. Please check the event regularly to see updates should you arrive late.
**Every three weeks, starting Jun 6**, we will do something a little more extensive such as a trip to a different city, some sort of booked event, or meet somewhere else depending on what people want. Top demand include festivals, Top Golf, Tubing, Toledo visit, Chicago trip, and Toronto trip. Outings to other areas of Michigan, festivals, road trips, or amusement parks are just a few potential ideas! Feel free to bring an idea of what you want to do as well.
All are welcome, but we will likely start walking near 5:15, so let us know if youâll be late so we know to wait.
This event is open for all 20s and 30s as well as people in the Happy Snail group.
Feel free to bring guests and friends!

BRAIN PLASTICITY UKULELE COLLECTIVE AND BLUESHOUSE
6pm
Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective is an open community of musicians playing at all levels and abilities. Ukes? Well, itâs more like 30 different instruments. Plasticity? Yes! The Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective believes that by sharing music and learning how to play a new instrument, you can: âDrop a brain bomb. Fire up the synapses. Rewire some neural pathways.â And BLUESHOUSE!, led by veteran English bluesman Mike Brooks, has enlivened countless stages and street parties around southeast Michigan over the last decade. Join us for a combination that will stretch your brain!
Mike Brooks, veteran blues guitar player/singer/songwriter from the UK has been playing guitar since the age of 10, and professionally since the age of 16. His musical career and accolades are many and varied, but include hitting the UK charts in 1979 (#28 on âthe New Wave of British Heavy Metalâ despite being a blues band), getting a cease and desist order from Walt Disney Corp for using a band name too close to that of a cartoon mouse, opening for bands such as the Yardbirds, the Animals, Wishbone Ash and Nine Below Zero, and playing in some of the most famous venues anywhere such as Londonâs Marquee, and, well, The Ark! In addition to leading BLUESHOUSE and fronting the Brain Plasticity Ukulele Collective, he also works with Ann Arborâs youth at the Neutral Zone, a continuation of a youth music project begun in the UK called Electric896, which taught disengaged youth how to rock the blues.

| Blue Llama: Tiffany Gridiron |
Tiffany Gridiron is a gifted jazz vocalist and songwriter who radiates joy and generosity on stage, even when singing the most haunting of songs. Her sultry vocals and playful approach have excited audiences in the United States, Japan, Finland and South Korea. Tiffanyâs love of singing began as a child in her family church where both of her parents served as musicians. In her early twenties, inspired by the debut album of Jill Scott, Tiffany sought out voice lessons that serendipitously put her in contact with the amazing jazz vocalist and educator Sunny Wilkinson. Through jazz standards, Sunny introduced Tiffany to a world of poetry and improvisation that would profoundly impact the rest of her life. Studying works of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and many other vocal legends helped Tiffany to find her own voice and style. Tiffany recorded five CDs of jazz standards, released by SONY RECORDS in Japan that have featured such greats as pianists Hank Jones, Tadataka Unno, drummer Omar Hakim, and many others. In 2019, Tiffanyâs longtime friend and collaborator Kris Johnson approached her about producing a project where her gifts as a songwriter could be featured. The result was âFrom My Heart to Yoursâ, Tiffanyâs most personal album to date. Released in September of 2023 on all digital platforms, five of the albumâs eight songs feature lyrics penned by Tiffany Gridiron and co-composed by Kris Johnson. Kris also arranged, played trumpet and served as producer on the project, with Brendon Davis (piano), Jonathan Muir-Cotton (bass), Nate Winn (drums), and Vivienne Smith (background vocals) also adding their breathtaking artistry to this material. You can now catch Tiffany at venues in the Midwest and East coast, performing her originals, jazz standards, and other songs that explore the nuances of the human condition. Her deep appreciation for music as a tool for healing, inspires Tiffany to use her voice to nurture connections between people and hearts.
